Stanford finished its regular season 21-7 and was seeded No. 4 headed into its 29th straight appearance in the NCAA tournament.

Senior Julia Smit added the 200 backstroke to four other individual school bests when she broke the 11-year-old mark of Misty Hyman, ’01, at the Toshiba Cup in November in Long Beach. Smit, who was named collegeswimming.com’s national swimmer of the week after six wins at the event, delivered a time of 1:52.83, bettering Hyman’s 1:53.12.

Smit also owns the Cardinal records for the 50 and 100 freestyle and the 200 and 400 individual medley. She also has been part of record-setting teams for three relay events (200, 400 and 800).

Junior Xanthe Travlos was named to the 16-member second team of 2009 All-Americans by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association after a season in which she scored 17 goals, the most by any Stanford player since Sara Hallock, ’94, scored 25 in 1993. Travlos is the first member of the Cardinal to earn All-American status since Justina Williams, ’99, in 1998.

Travlos, a 5-foot-1 midfielder from Staffordshire, England, started every game as Stanford went 17-5, won the NorPac tournament title and reached the NCAA tourney for the ninth time in school history (beating Boston College in a play-in game). The Cardinal lost to Princeton 4-0 in the first round of the NCAAs.
