Circulation, Subscriptions and Back Issues
When is the magazine published?
We publish five times per year: March, May, July, September and December. Please allow three weeks for domestic delivery.
How do I change my address?
Please note: If you change your address less than a month before the magazine is mailed, it may be sent to your old address. If you request mail forwarding from the U.S. Postal Service, Stanford should be forwarded.
Why am I receiving two magazines?
If you’re getting two copies of the magazine, it’s usually because you recently got married but didn’t tell us. Alternatively, due to a recent rebalancing of the Class Notes columns, you and your partner may now fall on opposite sides of the Class Notes split, resulting in two magazines in your mailbox. If you prefer to receive one copy of the magazine, email email@example.com and we’ll make it happen.
How can I find an article from a past issue?
You can search the full text of all articles published since September 1996 on this site. For information about articles that appeared before September 1996, please email us.
Can I request additional copies of an issue?
Yes, provided the issue is less than one year old. Please email us for details.
How do I subscribe?
If you are affiliated with Stanford, please email us to request a complimentary subscription. If you are not a Stanford affiliate, please print and mail our order form (PDF). Domestic subscriptions are $25 per year; international subscriptions are $50 per year. Alternatively, you can read the magazine for free on this site or download a free PDF of each issue.
How can I stay up-to-date between print issues of the magazine?
We publish frequently on this site. You can check our “latest” section to see what’s new. You can also subscribe to the Loop and our magazine newsletters for curated stories between issues.
Class Notes and Obituaries
I sent an update to my Class Correspondent. Why isn't it in the magazine?
It’s probably in the pipeline. Because it takes time to write, edit and produce high-quality Class Notes, your news typically appears two to three issues after you submit it.
Why can’t I read Class Notes online?
Because Class Notes sometimes contain personal information, we publish them only in print.
Where do I send obituary information? And what should I include?
How can I submit a Class Note?
You can write a class note online or email your correspondent at the address provided in the print magazine class column.
How do I submit a story idea?
We depend on readers to bring some of our best stories to light. We also depend on alumni for essays and Stanford memories. If you have an idea for us, email us a few sentences that explain the gist of the idea and why you think it would be a good fit for Stanford. You are welcome to include background information.
Where do I send comments, corrections or letters to the editor?
Comments, corrections and letters to the editor are always welcome. Submit them here or via email. Please include your phone number and/or email address (for verification purposes only; not for publication), name, city and state, and Stanford class year(s), if any.
Letters may be edited for length, clarity and civility.
How do I get my book considered for the Biblio File section?

We receive a lot of books, and we try to include as many as we can. It may take several issues for it to be included. Books not included in Biblio File will be mentioned in the Class Notes section of the magazine.
Are you hiring?
Any open positions are posted on the Stanford University job site.
Do you hire freelancers?
Yes, we work with a small group of experienced freelance writers, illustrators and photographers. If you would like to be considered for freelance assignments, please send a cover letter and clips/samples of your work via email. If you are proposing a specific story, please review our writers’ guidelines.
Does the magazine have internships?
Yes. We hire Stanford students with substantial journalism or digital/social media experience for both academic-year and summer internships. For more information, please email us.
- Every article in the magazine has some Stanford connection. These may be direct and obvious (a profile of a Stanford faculty member) or indirect and casual (the impact of a technology with Stanford origins).
- We publish articles from a broad spectrum that includes contemporary research, public policy, higher education, medicine, science and technology, art and entertainment, history, humor and sports. We also accept first-person essays or memoirs written by members of the Stanford community.
- Feature writers we engage have significant experience (demonstrated by published clips), are skilled in research and interviewing, write with panache and vigor, and bring a collaborative and professional attitude to the editing process. No Stanford affiliation is required, but familiarity with the university is helpful.
- We encourage writers with less experience to submit articles on spec, and occasionally invite them to write shorter pieces of 500 to 1,000 words.
- With rare exceptions (usually book excerpts ), we publish only original material.
- We strongly encourage reading the magazine before submitting a query.
- Queries should be sent via email.
- All queries are considered. Notification usually occurs within four to six weeks.
- Unsolicited manuscripts will not be returned unless accompanied by SASE.
