This, our first fiction competition, drew 140 entries -- enough to make the judges' job difficult. Fortunately, we had willing experts near at hand: Four Stegner creative writing fellows narrowed the submissions to 20 finalists, and English Professor Ken Fields chose the best three.
The contest was open to alumni of Stanford undergraduate, graduate and fellowship programs. Besides the first-place story published here, Fields awarded second place to Robert J. Croken, MA '65, for "Estate Planning," and third place to Deanna Carlyle, '87, for her story, "Thresholds".
