Choreographer Parijat Desai is one of four artists on campus during the winter quarter under the sponsorship of the Institute for Diversity in the Arts. Since 2001, IDA has hosted critically acclaimed artists to lead 10-week workshops that broaden existing curricula.

The other 2009 fellows are Jerry Quickley, a Los Angeles performance poet; Octavio Solis, a San Francisco playwright who is adapting Cervantes for the stage; and Mark Stewart, a Los Angeles singer/songwriter. Known onstage as Stew, he won a Tony last year for Passing Strange, an autobiographical musical he developed in part during a Public Theater residency at Stanford in 2003.

Each artist will give a public lecture on his or her work, and each workshop culminates in a performance. More information can be found at the institute's website.
