For professor of mathematics Jonathan Luk and his Princeton colleague Mihalis Dafermos, staring into space is anything but a waste of time. Their work on black holes and the theory of relativity has earned them a 2026 Bôcher Memorial Prize, the American Mathematical Society’s top prize for mathematical analysis.
Also landing among the stars is NASA astronaut Anil Menon, MS ’04, MD ’06. In July, he was welcomed to the International Space Station by a crew that included Chris Williams, ’05, who returned to Earth 12 days later.
There was no Cardinal overlap for Wimbledon wild card Arthur Fery, ’24, who became the first Stanford-affiliated tennis player to reach the semifinal stage since 1992, when John McEnroe, ’81, did so for the eighth time.
Golfer Michael Thorbjornson is another star from the Class of ’24. In August, he won his first PGA Tour title at the Rocket Classic, shooting his career low (a bogey-free 7-under 63) in the final round.
Tomiko Brown-Nagin prefers high scores. The expert in education law and policy, history, and constitutional law starts a new gig as dean of the Graduate School of Education in November.
And Alison Derbenwick Miller, ’92, also has a new educational role. She’s the CEO and executive director of the Association for Computing Machinery, the world’s largest educational and scientific computing society.
