Senior Dan Gill was named Gymnast of the Year by the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation on March 20, after winning the individual all-around title with a score of 54.475. In early April, Gill placed second in the all-around at the NCAA men’s gymnastics championships. He is spending spring quarter training for the U.S. championships and the Olympic trials, both in June. “My goal was to get an NCAA scholarship in gymnastics, and I achieved that,” Gill told Stanford this winter. “Then my goal was to make the national team, and I did that. To compete internationally, and I did that. The Olympics are my next goal.”

The women’s gymnastics squad (15-3) won the Pac-10 championship on March 20 with 197.900 points, edging out No. 1 UCLA, which compiled 197.875. Sophomore Natalie Foley took home top honors in the all-around, and seniors Lindsay Wing and Caroline Fluhrer tied four other athletes for the balance beam title. Kristen Smyth was named Coach of the Year. On April 3, the No. 2 Cardinal captured first place at the NCAA North Central regionals, with senior Lise Léveillé, Fluhrer and Wing finishing one-two-three in the all-around. Results from the mid-April NCAA finals will be published in the next issue of Stanford.

Senior Katie Norris took home the solo title at the synchronized swimming U.S. Collegiate Nationals on March 27. Stanford finished second overall with a score of 96.833, behind perennial champ Ohio State’s 98.167.

The top-ranked Cardinal women’s tennis team was undefeated (19-0) at press time, having swept No. 9 UCLA on April 3. In February, Stanford beat No. 2 Georgia 5-0 to win a record seventh title at the U.S. Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Women’s Team Indoor Championships.

Sorensen

Senior pitcher Dana Sorensen tossed a no-hitter as the No. 9 Cardinal softball team (29-8) beat Hawaii 1-0 in the championship game of the Stanford Classic on March 28. Sorensen (17-4) has a 1.08 ERA and has struck out 184 batters in 143 innings pitched.

The club squash team swatted its way to a best-ever 18th-place finish at the men’s College Squash Association championships in February, up from No. 33 just three years ago. Team captain Richard Sherwood, ’04, received the association’s Skillman Award for Sportsmanship.
