In its 17th straight season-opening win, the men’s basketball team (2-3) defeated the University of San Francisco, 98-83, at the Pete Newell Challenge on November 19. Junior guard-forward Dan Grunfeld scored a career-high 26 points in the team’s November 28 loss to Santa Clara. . . . Freshman guard Candice Wiggins leads the No. 5 women’s basketball team (5-0) with 15.4 points per game. She clinched a victory over No. 12 Texas Tech on November 28, scoring the go-ahead field goal with 1:34 left on the clock, then grabbing a rebound on the other end. Senior guard Kelley Suminski scored her 1,000th career point against Louisiana-Lafayette on November 24. . . . Second-ranked men’s water polo (22-4) won the MPSF championship with a 7-6 victory over No. 1 UCLA on November 28, earning an automatic NCAA berth. Results of the December 4-5 championship at Stanford’s Avery Aquatic Center will be published in the next issue. . . .

After clinching the Pac-10 titles in October, the No. 1 women’s and No. 2 men’s cross country teams failed to garner second consecutive national titles at the NCAAs November 22. The women placed fifth and the men finished sixth. Redshirt freshman Neftalem Araia led the Cardinal with an eighth-place finish of 31:05 in the men’s 10,000 meter race. . . . Senior outside hitter Ogonna Nnamani scored a match-high 22 kills against Arizona on November 27 as the women’s volleyball team ended the regular season 24-6. At press time, the Cardinal had been seeded 11th in the NCAAs. . . . Despite four saves by redshirt senior goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart, the No. 18 women’s soccer team (13-6-3) fell 1-0 in double overtime to No. 4 Santa Clara in the second round of the NCAA championships November 14. This is the second year in a row the Cardinal’s season has ended at the hands of the Broncos. Redshirt senior forward/midfielder Marcie Ward started the game despite a broken left foot. She lasted only seconds, but her 86th appearance tied her with Marcia Wallis, ’03, for Stanford career games played and games started. Ward also holds the career record for assists with 40.
