May/June 2007

Head men’s swimming coach Skip Kenney was suspended 60 days, without pay, on April 20 as a result of an investigation into allegations that he intentionally omitted names and records of some swimmers from University publications. Athletics director Bob Bowlsby had earlier suspended Kenney indefinitely, with pay, calling the deletions “unacceptable.” Kenney will return to his head coaching position when the suspension ends.

Some of the affected swimmers indicated in media interviews that Kenney had held grudges against them. Kenney apologized for his actions. “I had no right to omit the records of any athlete on media guides or other publications. This will not occur again,” he said in a prepared statement.

Noting that Kenney has 28 years of service to Stanford, Bowlsby said, “we’ve heard from many athletes who say that he has positively affected their lives. We are confident that, working together with us, Skip can complete his coaching career here at Stanford in a way that benefits our student-athletes and that honors the integrity of our program.” The investigation revealed no NCAA violations.

Kenney, a six-time NCAA Coach of the Year, did not accompany the swimming team to the 2007 NCAA championships in March.
