Stanford's new director of athletics is Bernard Muir, who has nearly 25 years of collegiate administrative experience in athletics and played basketball at Brown University. Muir, 44, was hired in July as the successor to Bob Bowlsby, who left in June to become commissioner of the Big 12 Conference.

Most recently the director of athletics and recreation services at the University of Delaware, Muir spent four years as director of athletics at Georgetown before moving to Delaware in 2009. He was appointed this year to the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee.

Meeting with press at Stanford, Muir expressed his appreciation for the University's values—"it's not just win at all costs"—and his desire to foster a family atmosphere throughout the athletics program.
