Think of it as a long-distance game of musical office chairs. In July, Robin G. Mamlet, dean of admissions at Swarthmore College, was named to succeed Robert Kinnally as Stanford's dean of undergraduate admission and financial aid. Just seven years ago, Kinnally succeeded Mamlet as dean of admission and financial aid at Sarah Lawrence College.

It is unlikely that Mamlet will follow Kinnally's next path, as he begins a program of study for the Catholic priesthood. Instead, she says, she hopes to "build on the exceptional job Bob Kinnally and his gifted staff have done in attracting to the University the wonderfully bright, talented and intellectually engaged students who are so well-matched for Stanford."

Mamlet, who has been been active with the National Association of College Admission Counselors, is committed to Stanford's need-blind admission policy, which allows U.S. citizens to be evaluated regardless of their ability to pay tuition.
