STEFFENS NAMED WORLD'S BEST

Freshman Maggie Steffens was named the best female water polo player of 2012 by the Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA) in the aftermath of her record 21-goal performance at last summer's London Olympics. Steffens deferred attendance for 2011-12 at Stanford to train for the Games, where the United States won the gold medal and she was most valuable player. She made her debut with the two-time defending national champion Cardinal team in January.

WOPAT PICKED AS ALL-AMERICAN

Junior Carly Wopat, a middle blocker who helped the women's volleyball team to a 30-4 record, was selected a first team All-American by Volleyball Magazine for the second straight season. Wopat was an all-conference pick as well, finishing the Pac-12 season in the top 10 in hitting percentage and blocks per set.
