As much as the founders believed that a university should provide a practical education, Jane Stanford in particular also recognized the importance of the arts in nourishing young minds. Today the campus offers a virtual smorgasbord. More than 40 freestanding outdoor sculptures dot the grounds, including Auguste Rodin's Burghers of Calais and works by artists such as Alexander Calder, Andrew Goldsworthy, Maya Lin, Joan Miró and Claes Oldenburg. Would you like frieze with that?
