Tiger Beat

March/April 1997

In just six months as a pro golfer, Tiger Woods, '97, already has won four tournaments and earned $1.1 million. But that's just, er, pawing the surface of "Tigermania":

  • He's the subject of four books, including two biographies, a children's reader and a memoir by his father, Earl, due in May.
  • His $60 million smile (that's his pay for endorsing Nike and Titleist) has beamed from the covers of at least 10 magazines, from Asian Golfer to Newsweek. Sports Illustrated named him 1996 Sportsman of the Year. He's also joined up with other sports celebs as co-owner of Manhattan's All-Star Cafe.
  • In January, he and his parents set up the Tiger Woods Foundation to fund inner-city charities and boost minority participation in golf. The hunt for more tigers is on.
