Call it a Cardinal Caucus. Three graduates of the University took seats last year on the seven-member city council of Bainbridge Island, Wash. Shelly Muser Halligan, '69 (left), Norm Wooldridge, '59, and Lois Curtis, '55, serve as part-time lawmakers in the Seattle bedroom community.

Like many small towns, the issues there are routine but important: taxes, road improvements, harbor management. Curtis says the first year on the job was "ominously tranquil," adding, "I'm not sure what the next three will bring." One thing is certain: The town will have a new City Hall. The design already has been approved by the council. Maybe sandstone arches and a red-tiled roof? "Not very Northwesty," laughs Wooldridge. "How about a red metal roof?"
