The youngest guns on the No. 6 men’s gymnastics team came out firing in a January 16 victory at then-No. 5 UC-Berkeley. Freshmen David Sender and Sho Nakamori and sophomores Peter Derman and Alex Schorsch all placed first in various events. Cal avenged the loss less than a week later at the Cardinal Open.... The sixth-ranked baseball team swept Fresno State January 29 and 30, bringing its lifetime record against the Bulldogs to 73-47. Infielders Jed Lowrie and John Mayberry Jr. and pitcher Mark Romanczuk, all juniors, have been named preseason All-Americans.... Junior Dana Kirk won both the 100 and 200 fly during the women’s swimming team’s January 22 win over previously undefeated Arizona. Freshman breaststroker Caroline Bruce won three individual events in each of the next two dual meets, against UCLA and USC.... 2004 NCAA wrestling champion Matt Gentry returned from illness to win his match during Stanford’s January 23 loss to Cal State-Bakersfield. Gentry, a senior, has not lost a match since March 2003. Junior Imad Kharbush is second on the Cardinal squad with a 21-5 record this season.
