Director Danny Boyle's directive for the claustrophobic scenes of 127 Hours was that nothing on the set could break away for filming. Actor James Franco's portrayal of outdoorsman Aran Ralston's confinement would feel as real as possible. Production designer Suttirat Larlarb researched and surveyed and photographed Bluejohn Canyon in ways that led to a reproduction of 30 feet of the canyon space in a warehouse in Salt Lake City.
