The men’s basketball team took the big March step demanded of it—a return to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2008—and then bounded beyond all expectations into the national spotlight.
Two victories in the Pacific-12 Conference tourney (before a loss to UCLA) helped boost the Cardinal into an opening NCAA regional matchup with New Mexico. After knocking off the Lobos, 58-53, Stanford stunned powerhouse Kansas, 60-57, and advanced to the Sweet 16. But that was as far as the squad’s newfound mojo extended, at least for this year, after it encountered another tourney Cinderella, Dayton, and succumbed, 82-72.
