NO INVITATIONS ARE REQUIRED: Visitors are now welcome to explore the ground-floor galleries, roof garden and surrounding space of the McMurtry Building, which opened with the start of the academic year as the collaborative home for the art and art history department. Adjacent to the Cantor Arts Center and Anderson Collection, the building will serve as an arts-district hub for both the practice and study of design, drawing, digital media, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture and filmmaking.

The 100,000-square-foot facility, which houses the Art and Architecture Library, features flexible spaces, such as a presentation room that also can be tailored for teaching or performances, and leading-edge equipment, including 3-D scanners and printers, and laser-cutting technology. Among the opening-year activities will be the second undergraduate exhibition, a juried show that has been established as an annual event after drawing more than 10,000 viewers to its debut last year at the Stanford Art Gallery.
