That’s how much a team of researchers paid Ugandan landowners annually for every hectare of forest that they preserved, leading to a 50 percent reduction in deforestation over a two-year period compared with forests of landowners who did not receive the incentive. The study, co-authored by two Stanford researchers, sought to reduce carbon in the atmosphere while also addressing economic needs of landowners in the developing world.
