By May, Stanford had to swim for it. The remaining opportunities for teams to extend the school's streak of winning at least one NCAA championship a year were drying up. But the women's water polo squad—yes, we're going to say it—kept the magic afloat. The team captured its third national title in four years, beating UCLA 9-5 in the tournament final and extending the Cardinal's run of championships to 38 years (dating to 1976-77).

The team went 25-1 overall, held the nation's No. 1 ranking going into the postseason and relished a 12-8 victory over No. 4-ranked Cal in its NCAA semifinal. Against No. 2-ranked UCLA, Stanford trailed by three goals early and then shut out the Bruins in the second half while closing out the scoring 7-0. That made for the fourth title in team history.
