Young visitors to San Francisco’s California Academy of Sciences were treated to a free scoop courtesy of National Geographic and Magnolia Ice Cream as part of a cross-country campaign to encourage kids to explore and protect nature. The Ice Cream Expedition was the brain (freeze?) child of Caleb Kruse, ’14. The Earth systems major planned to visit 33 states over the course of two months before returning to Stanford in the fall to pursue a PhD in marine biology. National Geographic pro-vided seed funding for the project in the form of a $5,000 Young Explorers Grant. Kruse and his partners—brother Cameron and friend Jordan Fatke—then raised more than $18,000 through Kickstarter.
