ACADEMY AWARDS: Matthew P. Scott, professor of developmental biology and genetics, and Norman H. Sleep, professor of geophysics, were elected in April to the National Academy of Sciences. Six faculty members were named to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in April. They are: Timothy F. Bresnahan, professor of economics; Michael D. Fayer, professor of chemistry; Ronald J. Gilson, professor of law; Roger D. Kornberg, professor of structural biology; Terry M. Moe, professor of political science; and Jack N. Rakove, professor of history and American studies. Roger N. Shepard, professor emeritus of psychology, was elected in April to the American Philosophical Society. Chemistry professor Richard N. Zare was named in May the 1999 recipient of the $300,000 Welch Award in Chemistry for his lifetime achievements.
FUTURE PROMISE: Three Stanford scholars -- Gordon H. Chang, associate professor of history; Michael Riordan, assistant to the director, Stanford Linear Accelerator Center; and Brian White, professor of mathematics -- have been chosen to receive 1999 Guggenheim Fellowship Awards. Matthew Spence, a junior majoring in political science, was among 65 students nationwide to receive a $30,000 Truman scholarship. Seniors Michael Martinez and Maren Norton won the J.E. Wallace Sterling Award in June. The honor recognizes those with strong potential to serve the University.
SUPER STAFF: Winners of the ninth annual Amy J. Blue Awards were Patricia de Castries, assistant director and data manager at the language center; Estellita Hall, a client services assistant in the office of training and organizational development; and Teresa Riseborough, a facilities supervisor. The prize is recognizes dedication to accomplishment, commitment to people and enthusiasm.
