Forty years ago, some students working at Stanford's KZSU radio station rented a big old house in the Portola Valley community of Los Trancos Woods. There they developed a ritual of marching through the neighborhood to the beat of drums and blare of horns, then celebrating with a few beers at Zott's on Alpine Road. Today, the rowdy band has 166 members -- 10 of them alums -- who strut their stuff in a dozen parades a year, always trailed by a beer cart. "There are a lot of us sane people who like to go insane for a parade," explains band leader Don "Smiley" Nelson, '58. Above, from left, are Jim Pansch, MS '68; Nelson; Stew Gillmor, '60, BS '62; band co-leader Jim Harvey, '58; and Carolyn Lutticken, MA '73.
