OXFORD BOUND Three recent graduates are set to study in England after winning high-profile scholarships. Karen Matsuoka, ’98, and Aly Remtulla, ’98, snagged Rhodes Scholarships (Matsouka from the United States, Remtulla from Canada), while Eric Beerbohm, ’98, won a Marshall Scholarship.

TOP PROFS Several faculty members have been honored for outstanding work in their fields. Gerald Gunther, an emeritus professor of law, won the 12th Triennial Book Award of the Order of the Coif for Learned Hand: The Man and the Judge; Thomas J.R. Hughes, a professor of mechanical engineering, took home the Worcester Reed Warner Medal for his writing on engineering; Robert Byer, MS ’67, PhD ’69, a professor of applied physics, earned the Laser Institute of America’s Arthur L. Schawlow Award for his contributions to laser applications; Yuan-Chi Lin, an associate professor of anesthesia and pediatrics, received the 1998 Distinguished Physician Award from the Chinese-American Physicians Society; and Norman H. Sleep, a professor of geophysics, received the Walter H. Bucher Medal from the American Geophysical Union for his work on thermo-mechanics of mantle and crustal processes in the Earth and neighboring planets.

LIGHTING THE WAY Two members of the Stanford community will receive the 1999 Koret Prize at a luncheon in May. Stanford President Gerhard Casper will be honored for his contributions to American education, while professor of religious studies Arnold Eisen will be recognized for his contributions to the Jewish community. With the award, the San Francisco-based Koret Foundation seeks to honor those “who, by their example, can serve to light the way for others to follow.”
