Over the past 25 years, the Stanford grounds and planning departments—with the assistance of local volunteers—have planted more than 2,000 oaks from acorns to help restore the ecosystem in the Foothills near the Dish. An organization called Magic works with the University to coordinate volunteers to raise, plant and then water the seedlings during the dry season. This summer, volunteers carrying buckets weighing 15 to 20 pounds each watered trees planted last winter and spring by Engineering School alumni.
