Books for Newbies

High school summer reading could be a chore, says freshman Ryan Devens of Salem, Va. But "these were not," he notes, reflecting on the Three Books sent to the class of 2018 and transfer students.

Selected by Persis Drell, new dean of the School of Engineering, the titles were Physics for Future Presidents: The Science Behind the Headlines, Radioactive: Marie and Pierre Curie—A Tale of Love and Fallout and My Year of Meats.

Freshman Sayuri Sekimitsu of Tokyo enjoyed the connection she felt with Meats author Ruth Ozeki, who is half Japanese. And the cover of Radioactive stood out, she says with a smile: "I like that it glowed."
