Jennifer Eberhardt, a psychology professor who studies race and law, and IBM research scientist Craig Gentry, PhD '09, are among the 2014 winners of MacArthur Foundation fellowships.
The awards, which include a $625,000 stipend over five years, are known as "genius" grants and among the most prestigious bestowed on scholars and artists. Said Eberhardt, "I had no inkling, no idea they were con-sidering me. It felt like a pivotal moment in my life."
Eberhardt, who joined Stanford in 1998, has focused on how individuals racially categorize people, with an emphasis on the associations between race and criminalization. Gentry, a computer scientist, is credited with globally influential work in cryptography, relating in part to cloud computing and data privacy.
