Fifty years ago, the protest over the band director's dismissal that resulted in the formation of the Leland Stanford Junior (pause) University Marching Band was hatched in a 1930s-era wooden building situated at the north end of what is now the GSB. From 1973 to 1998, as the Band cemented its national reputation for envelope-pushing humor and rock 'n' roll performances, its base of operations was a condemned ROTC firing range, located on the site where the Arrillaga Alumni Center stands today. After a few years in the wilderness, the Band now has a permanent home with a tiered rehearsal hall; dedicated rooms for the Dollies, Trees, student management and drums; and a convenient location near the football stadium.
