Waste Not

Linda Cicero

You can tell a lot about people by going through their trash. Since last spring, the refuse from 19 campus units and events has been sifted, sorted and sized up by volunteers at the Stanford recycling center as part of the University's ongoing waste reduction and recycling program. In 2008, Stanford diverted 64 percent of its garbage away from the landfill, but the ultimate goal is zero waste. The results from the first 15 audits provide insight into how the Farm deals with its dross and where there's room for improvement.
