Tall Tree Tales

David Gonzales/Stanford Athletics

The arboreal antics of Tree Week, during which candidates vie to become the University’s unofficial mascot for the following year, are the stuff of Stanford legend. No stump speeches here: would-be saplings go out on a limb to impress the selection committee—made up of members of the Band, and current and former Trees—by performing outrageous stunts. To complicate matters, those involved tend to, ahem, spruce up the details. Can you tell the real feats from the pulp fiction?

A. Swallowing a live, 2-foot garter snake
B. Emerging from a vat of green goo
C. Walking on water at Lake Lag
D. Being hung upside-down by the ankles
E. Drinking water from the Claw
F. Being scarred by leeches (in the shape of a tree, natch)
G. Bungee-jumping from Hoover Tower
