There's one that’s named for a horse—Electioneer. And one named for a herd of cows—Ayrshire Farm. There are many borrowed from botany—including Alamosa (cottonwood), Cedro (cedar) and Roble (valley oak). But most of the street names at Stanford honor humans: the explorers, friars and administrators of Alta California, various friends of Leland, and generations of professors. Richard W. Cottle, professor emeritus of management science and engineering, wanted to know Lasuen from Salvatierra, so he wrote an 80-page pocket guide, Stanford Street Names (Stanford Historical Society, $5.95).
