The weekend began with a candlelight dinner for 1,300 in the Inner Quad, where a spotlight-drenched Memorial Church loomed like some elaborate Hollywood backdrop. It ended three days later in Mem Aud with a speech by Provost Condoleezza Rice and an Axe yell led by two spirited alums in their 80s. Those two events were bookends to the pomp and happenstance of Reunion/Homecoming '97, which brought nearly 6,000 alumni and friends to campus in late September.

The class parties were a hit, and the Cardinal beat Oregon, 58-49, in a wild night football game. But for many, the special classes and seminars were the highlight. Said Debbie DePuy Giunta, '72, who came from Los Angeles to celebrate her 25th: "I went birding with Donald Kennedy, enjoyed the Internet class and was blown away by the panel I saw on foreign relations."
