Peter Likins, ’57, PhD ’65, retired last fall as president of the University of Arizona and was succeeded by Robert Shelton, ’70. This got us wondering how many other Stanford alums were heads of colleges or universities. Our search revealed more than 40 chancellors and presidents in the United States and eight foreign countries. The list includes the East (Richard Levin, ’68, at Yale), West (Jean-Lou Chameau, MS ’77, PhD ’81, at Caltech) and a few institutions whose location challenged our knowledge.

See if you can match the school with the state where it resides.

1. Concord University (Jerry Beasley, PhD ’81)
2. Valley City State U. (Ellen-Earle Chaffee, MA ’81, PhD ’81)
3. Paine College (Shirley Ann Redd Lewis, PhD ’79)
4. Lyon College (Walter Roettger, ’63)

a. Georgia
b. West Virginia
