SCIENCE STARS: Dan Boneh, assistant professor of computer science and electrical engineering, and Hongjie Dai, assistant professor of chemistry, each received a $625,000 Packard fellowship, which recognizes promising researchers. Two scientists at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center were cited for their research in physics. Staff member Raymond Arnold won the Tom W. Bonner Prize in Nuclear Physics, and Professor Marty Breidenbach received the W.K.H. Panofsky Prize in Experimental Particle Physics.

STELLAR SERVICE: Two laboratory workers, Frank Levy of the mechanical engineering department and Robert Jones of the Center for Materials Research and the department of geological and environmental sciences, have captured the Marshall D. O'Neill Award, presented annually by Stanford faculty to staff members who have made outstanding contributions to University research. Margaret Neale, a professor in the Graduate School of Business, was the 1999 recipient of the Jaedicke Silver Apple Award, presented by the school's alumni association for outstanding service to graduates.

CULTURAL CONTRIBUTIONS: Carl Djerassi, professor of chemistry and developer of the birth control pill, was the only living person chosen by the London Sunday Times Magazine as one of the 30 most influential figures of the second millennium. Nathan Oliveira, professor emeritus of art whose family is originally from Portugal, has received the degree of Commander of the Order of Henry the Navigator from the president of Portugal for contributions that expanded that country's culture. Robert Conquest, a senior research fellow at the Hoover Institution, has been selected to receive the Richard M. Weaver Award for Scholarly Letters. Conquest is being honored for his work on honor and virtue in various cultures.
