'GENIUS' AMONG US: Eva Silverstein, an assistant professor at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, was chosen as one of this year's MacArthur Foundation "genius" fellows. A theoretical physicist whose studies have provided new ideas about the nature of the universe, Silverstein, 28, will receive $235,000 to spend as she chooses. Matthew W. Meskell was named the Law School's Nathan Abbott Scholar, a distinction given annually since 1966 to the graduate with the highest cumulative grade-point average. Michael Scot Effle, the top graduate from the School of Business, was honored as the Henry Ford II Scholar.

TALENTED TEACHERS: Mary Louise Roberts, associate professor of history, and Joshua Landy, assistant professor of French and Italian, received Stanford's Walter J. Gores awards, which recognize excellence in teaching. The Associated Students of Stanford University presented distinguished teaching awards to Barton Bernstein, professor of history, and Purnima Mankekar, assistant professor of cultural and social anthropology. Professor Paul Romer was selected by MBA students as the 1999 recipient of the Stanford Business School's Distinguished Teaching Award.

STANFORD STALWARTS: Richard Powers, a lecturer in the drama department's dance division, and Elizabeth Bernhardt, professor of German studies and director of the Stanford Language Center, received Lloyd W. Dinkelspiel awards for outstanding contributions to undergraduate education. Graduating seniors Claudia Aranda, a political science major, and Boris Bershteyn, an economics and political science major, also won Dinkelspiel awards. Michael Hudnall, deputy general counsel, received the Kenneth M. Cuthbertson Award for exceptional service to the University.
