EXCELLENCE IN ENGINEERING: Four Stanford professors are among 80 elected to the National Academy of Engineering in February. Chosen for contributions to the field were Patrick M. Hanrahan, professor of computer science and electrical engineering; Ronald A. Howard and Donald L. Iglehart, professors of engineering-economic systems and operations research; and James R. Swartz, professor of chemical engineering. They join 75 Stanford colleagues in the academy, which has 1,984 U.S. members and 54 foreign associates. Robert G. Lindblom, a consulting professor of petroleum engineering, was awarded an honorary membership in the American Association of Petroleum Geologists in April. Thomas Kailath, professor of electrical engineering, received an honorary doctorate from the University of Carlos III, in Madrid in January.
SCIENCE STARS: Alice Whittemore, a professor of epidemiology, received the American Cancer Society Award for Research in cancer epidemiology and prevention in April. Whittemore was recognized for her contributions to the study of chronic disease. Mark Zoback, a professor of geophysics, was named an honorary fellow of the European Union of Geosciences in March.
STALWARTS: Charles Bonini, professor of management science at the Graduate School of Business, is the third recipient of the Robert T. David award for extraordinary contributions to the school. Bonini has enjoyed a 40-year career there. Anita Payne, a senior research scientist in the division of reproductive biology at the Medical School, won the Carl G. Hartman Award -- the highest honor given by the Society for the Study of Reproduction -- for her research, commitment to student advising and mentoring, and service to the society.
