Beginning this fall, Stanford will offer the first online high school for gifted students. Developed by the Education Program for Gifted Youth and funded by a $3.3 million gift from the Malone Family Foundation of Englewood, Colo., the school will offer a three-year, fully accredited, diploma-granting program. Those expected to take advantage of the program include students from rural areas, underperforming schools and overseas, as well as those who are ready for advanced instruction in a particular subject area. Students can choose to attend full time or use the program to supplement the offerings of local schools, and have the option of attending an eight-week summer program at Stanford for opportunities such as laboratory work and to bond with classmates and instructors.
