This exercise helps you visualize two ill-matched objects together. Try not to resist the strange association, but rather have fun with it simply because it works.

First, make a clear mental image of each object. Then visualize the two objects together until you come up with one clear image association of the two together. In the process, you will become aware of your thoughts and emotions as you start weaving a ministory association. Let all associations come through; do not try to censor them. For example, use the words “hair” and “water.” Imagine a beautiful hairdo destroyed by a sudden rainfall or Ophelia’s hair floating among the water lilies. Make your image association dramatic if you can: emotions of humor, joy, sorrow, anger or surprise will help you process it more deeply. Here are 10 pairs to use in your mini-stories:

pot/corridor
carpet/coffee
earring/lamp
palm tree/chewing gum
dentist/bathroom
sun/fingers
patio/scissors
steak/sand
nail/dictionary
unicorn/coat
