Every baseball diamond is a field of dreams when the season is brand-new. When Stanford opened the year against Vanderbilt, a late February’s twilight was fading away over Klein Field at Sunken Diamond. As the team assembled along the first-base line for the national anthem, everyone on hand could bask in the same sense of anticipation. The payoff was literally extra-special: Stanford won 6-5 with a two-out run in the bottom of the 10th inning.
