University of Chicago Provost Richard P. Saller has been named dean of the School of Humanities and Sciences. He takes the helm of Stanford’s largest school April 1, succeeding biological sciences professor Sharon Long.
Saller has been a professor of history and classics at Chicago since 1984. His research focuses on Roman social and economic history. He became dean of the social sciences division in 1994 and provost in 2002.
“At Chicago, he was a renowned dean of the social sciences, and is a visionary and beloved provost,” says University Provost John Etchemendy, PhD ’82. “Stanford is honored that he has agreed to lead Stanford’s School of Humanities and Sciences, our University’s heart and soul.”
