The Beebo Brinker Chronicles is on stage through March 13 at San Francisco's Brava Theater Center and at the Buffalo United Artists Theater in Buffalo, N.Y. Brava's production is the West Coast premiere of the play by Kate Moira Ryan and Linda S. Chapman, based on Ann Bannon's novels about gay and lesbian life in Greenwich Village in the 1950s.
"This is a good time for Brava to celebrate a 'pre-Stonewall' period for women. . . . The books feel angst-ridden yet fun, contemplative as well as magical," says Raelle Myrick-Hodges, Brava artistic director. Bannon's fiction "still speaks to the coming of age that occurs for all women, no matter what one's sexuality."
