That's approximately how many gallons of water the university conserves per day by turning off and draining 20 of the campus's fountains including the Claw, Shumway and Tanner—just one of several measures taken in the interest of prudent water use during California's ongoing drought. Although on average the fountains use only 0.003 percent of Stanford's domestic water supply, says Margaret "Marty" Laporte, associate director of utilities for environmental quality and water efficiency, they can leak and lose water to evaporation.
