It's been nearly four years since Amy Biehl, '89, was killed by a mob of black South Africans while on a mission to end racial violence in that country (Stanford, March 1994, cover story). Since then, Biehl's parents have set up a foundation in her memory dedicated to anti-poverty programs and education. One beneficiary is the Mosaic Center, a Cape Town program that conducts workshops on sexual abuse and women's rights. With $50,000 raised so far, the foundation also supports three university scholarships, including one at Stanford for Solange Jacobs, '00, Biehl's friend and one-time flatmate in Mowbry, a Cape Town suburb. "We have lots of Amy to be guided by," says her father, "including the simple notion of the power of one--what a single person can achieve on a shoestring."
